We Help Melbourne Homes With:
🪜 Testing & Maintenance
Smoke alarms are active devices with active components. Householders rarely notice them unless they are triggered, but they are not ‘set and forget’ smoke detectors. To ensure they function properly smoke alarms need regular maintenance. Maintenance includes:
- Testing
- Cleaning
- Replacement of Batteries
🪫 Alarm Battery Issues
All smoke alarms have batteries.
The types of batteries vary. e.g. AA, AAA, 9v alkaline, long life lithium ion.
These batteries may be the sole source of power to the smoke alarm, or backup in hard-wired smoke alarms.
Batteries have a limited lifespan. When battery power is low, smoke alarms will sound a single beep every 30 seconds to a minute.
Low battery power will not cause a smoke alarm to go into full alarm.
Is your alarm still beeping even after changing the batteries? We can help!
🚨 Constant Alarm Beeping
Constant beeping or “chirping” is generally a result of expired or faulty smoke alarms, but they can be difficult to turn off.
Having a constant, loud, beeping sound can be incredibly disruptive and unnerving for householders.
With over 15 years of experience and thousands of serviced smoke alarms, we can often recognise your model of alarm by photo or video alone, and can then help explain how to turn it off before coming out for the inspection & replacement.
🔕 False Alarms & Poor Placement
Poor placement of smoke alarms can reduce their effectiveness or increase the number of false alarms you experience. E.g. proximity to:
- Kitchen
- Bathroom
- Wall Cornice
- Air Conditioning vent
False alarms commonly occur in the kitchen area. Smoke alarm installation in or close to the kitchen is not usually recommended.
Factors which affect this are:
- Proximity of smoke alarm to kitchen stove
- Use & effectiveness of the stove extraction fan
- Cooking style of the occupant
False alarms can also occur when the alarm itself is expired or faulty.
🧯 First-Class Fire Safety Options & Advice
While it’s not (yet) compulsary in Victoria, it’s recommended that each bedroom now contains a smoke alarm if doors are closed while occupants sleep.
This is particularly the case because of how many electrical devices are contained the in modern bedroom.
You can’t smell when you’re asleep, so having an alarm to wake you up to a fire that has started in your bedroom could save your life.

Is Your Home Compliant?
In Victoria, smoke alarms must be:
- Placed outside each sleeping area (within 1.5m of bedroom doors)
- On each floor of a multi-storey home in the path people use to get out
But Fire Rescue Victoria (FRS) recommends installing smoke alarms in all bedrooms.
Failure to meet these parameters not only poses incredible risk to you, your home and your family, but it can expose you to complications with your home & contents insurance.Â
After a fire incident, it is standard procedure for fire investigators to check whether Australian Standards, Manufacturers Recommendations, and Statutory Obligations have been met.

Why Not DIY? Why Get an Expert?
Outside of having the peace of mind that an experienced professional electrician or technician has serviced your smoke alarms correctly, there are a few reasons that it makes sense to have your smoke alarms installed & serviced by Smoke Alarm Specialists.
Firstly, for home & contents insurance compliance purposes, it can be beneficial to receive a compliance certification after maintenance or installation, which is what we provide at Smoke Alarm Specialists.
Another benefit of engaging a Smoke Alarm Service professional like Smoke Alarm Specialists is that they provide a service warranty. At Smoke Alarm specialists, we provide a 3 year service warranty. Even new smoke alarms can be faulty or become so within the first year of installation, so having the peace of mind that Jamie & the team will ensure your alarms continue to be compliant provides greater safety and peace of mind.
An increasing number of Melbourne households now use hard-wired, often interconnected smoke alarms. These require installation & changing over by a Grade-A Electrician, such as the ones Smoke Alarm Specialists provide. They can also provide a Certificate of Electrical Safety (COES) for warranty purposes and assurance of compliant smoke alarms.
It’s recommended that you as the home owner or renter test your smoke alarms regularly, ideally monthly, which is generally simple to do without needing a technician. However in some households the main residences may have mobility issues or exceedingly high ceilings, in which case from a safety perspective it makes sense to engage the services of smoke alarm experts or electricians with the proper equipment.
Landlords are required by law to make sure rental properties are inspected by smoke alarm experts every 12 months in Victoria, this is for a reason. As a homeowner, why would you not want that same level of safety, care & compliance for your own home & family?
